Consultation On Further Tower Block Demolitions

Construction News Image
North Lanarkshire Council's housing committee has approved a consultation process on proposals for further tower block demolitions, as part of an ongoing regeneration scheme.

The second phase of the scheme has identified a number of prominent multi-story blocks in Motherwell, a tower in Coatbridge and low-rise blocks in Coatbridge, Kilsyth, Motherwell, Airdrie and Wishaw for potential demolition. The consultation process involving 974 households will ask residents for their views on the proposals.

This latest phase follows a major change in housing policy announced by the council in 2017, which saw plans agreed to demolish a number of tower blocks and low-rise blocks in the area and replace them with modern homes fit for the future.

The first phase involved 1,700 households, with 81% of respondents agreeing with the regeneration proposals. This initial phase is now nearing completion, with most tenants having already moved or agreed to future housing options, and several blocks having been knocked down or are in the process of being demolished.

Stephen Llewellyn, Chief Officer of Housing Management, said: "This is a significant moment in the council's long-term vision to regenerate communities and provide quality, modern homes for families and local people that meet their future needs and expectations.

"The views of our residents on the regeneration proposals are vital to informing the council's decision making.

"Our new build housing programme is continuing at pace, with a commitment to providing 5,000 new council homes for rent by 2035. The clearance of many of the tower sites will pave the way for the construction of new homes for tenants to enjoy, providing a significant boost to employment and construction in North Lanarkshire."

Information packs and surveys will be delivered to residents living in properties identified as part of phase two of the programme, with a number of community engagement events also planned, including open days and discussions with tenants' and residents' associations.
