Deal To Deliver Tennis Court Improvements Across Dundee Proposed

Construction News Image
Outdoor tennis courts all over Dundee are set for significant upgrades under a new deal.

Dundee City Council is proposing a partnership agreement with Tennis Scotland, which will see around £110,000 of direct funding pledged from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Parks Investment Programme.

The national funding from the UK Government and Lawn Tennis Association looks to renovate public park tennis courts for the benefit of their local communities and aims to engage one million more players in tennis across the UK supporting health and wellbeing outcomes.

Dundee's 24 tennis courts in council-run parks will be brought up to LTA standards through the use of the funds, except for the facilities at Camperdown Park, Baxter Park and Broughty Ferry Esplanade which have recently received such improvements.

The proposals will be put to local councillors next week.

Dundee City Council's Neighbourhood Services Committee Convener, Heather Anderson said: "It's great to see this additional funding made available to boost the tennis courts around Dundee's parks ensuring all of the facilities meet the high Lawn Tennis Association standards.

"The Lawn Tennis Association is making a significant investment in the city and the partnership between the council and Tennis Scotland will hopefully enable us to support many more people to enjoy playing tennis on their local court.

"The benefits from being active are clear and having the option of using high-quality tennis courts in your community can go far in helping many to maintain a healthy lifestyle."

The council's partnership agreement with Tennis Scotland would see the council commit to cover all maintenance & operating costs and set aside future refurbishment costs for all venues in approximately 10 years.

The agreement would see Tennis Scotland deliver participation and coaching programmes, manage the ClubsPark booking system and ensure income derived from booking of floodlighting and hire of courts to independent operators is received by the council.

The Neighbourhood Services Committee will meet on Monday 12 June 2023 to discuss the plans.
