Aberdeen Council Highlights Year Of Climate Action

Aberdeen City Council has outlined a year of climate action which has supported it's journey towards net zero and climate resilience.

As part of several actions taken to combat the climate and nature emergency, over 3,500 homes have now been connected to the district heating network.

Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Ian Yuill said: "Climate change is happening now and it’s vital that we work with partners to reduce the impact. It’s important to review the action taken to date, and there is much more to do to meet our net zero ambitions."

Vice-convenor of the Net Zero, Environment and Transport committee, Councillor Miranda Radley, added: "Addressing the climate and nature emergency not only affects the environment but also delivers social and economic benefits for the North East."

The collaborative actions were taken by the Council and partner organisations to help deliver on the six themes set out in the Net Zero Aberdeen Routemap, and Aberdeen Adapts framework. Highlights included:

Mobility Theme

•Completion of the South College Street development project, providing improved opportunities for active travel.

Buildings and Heat Theme

•3,631 homes and 30 public buildings have now been connected to the district heating network.

Circular Economy Theme

•The Reuse Shop at Hazlehead Recycling Centre launched its “Big Paint Give-Away”, giving away paint donated to our citizens the shop for free.

•The Central Library launched a “Lend and Mend Hub”, helping citizens to repair, reuse and upcycle items.

Energy Supply Theme

•The Scottish Schools Hydrogen Challenge inter-schools final was held at Aberdeen Science Centre, with representation from Cults and Oldmachar Academies.

Natural Environment Theme

•Over 4,700 wildflowers were planted and 355 people took part in Bio-Blitz wildlife events as part of the Parks for Pollinators project, which aims to create and improve areas for wildlife to thrive at Duthie and Seaton Parks

Community Empowerment Theme

•Animations featuring Sam and Dave, the “streetwise seagulls”, were created to help engage with children and young people on placemaking projects. Adaptation and Resilience

•Work to re-naturalise a section of the Den burn started, following the award of funding from SEPA.
