Construction News Image
Argyll and Bute Council have announced a new construction skills programme for high school pupils in the region.

Lochgilphead High School pupils will try their hands at joinery, roofing, plumbing, and brickwork when they attend a series of traditional skills workshops funded and delivered by the council's Lochgilphead Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS).

The workshops will take place at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in Lochgilphead, on 13 June, and allow young people to learn more about potential career paths.

Taster sessions will be provided by:

• Noremac Argyll Ltd

• MacLeod Construction Ltd

• A&C Building Contractors Ltd

Lochgilphead CARS is a heritage-led regeneration project that runs until March 2026 and offers grant funding to property owners to assist with the repair of their historic buildings.

The council also identified four priority buildings as part of the scheme. Work at two of these is now almost complete (1 Argyll Street and 3-17 Colchester Square) and work is currently underway at 2-4 Argyll Street and 6-10 Argyll Street.

Historic Scotland funds the Lochgilphead CARS training and education programme as part of their contribution to the scheme. In addition to the traditional skills workshops, the scheme has delivered several training courses and events in Lochgilphead with a range of participants including students, local contractors, and building professionals. Plans are underway to deliver further training courses and community events.
