Envirowise Building A Reputation In Sustainable Homes

With sustainability increasingly becoming a central focus within the construction sector, housebuilders are under growing pressure to consider their carbon footprint and reduce their environmental impact.

Establishing better environmental practice can not only improve a company's ability to attract and retain customers, it can present a business with significant cost savings throughout its operation.

Leading by example, Scottish housebuilder Mactaggart and Mickel has built an enviable reputation as a pioneer of environmental best practice, winning a number of awards for their efforts. With a long term environmental programme now in place, the company has integrated sustainable business and corporate responsibility firmly into its business culture.

A working partnership with sustainability experts Envirowise has enabled Mactaggart and Mickel to successfully introduce a waste management project across all sites and now the housebuilder has embarked on a project to measure its own homes against the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The new Code is an important tool in the Government's plan to minimise the environmental impact caused by new developments. Mactaggart & Mickel intends to use a Code Level 4 compliant home as part of an R&D project. This project will ultimately aim to help improve the environmental performance of all its new homes that have yet to be built throughout Scotland.

Since implementing their sustainability programme Mactaggart and Mickel has also signed up to Scottish Powers Green Energy Tariff and selected 'green', fixtures and fittings eg: energy efficient light bulbs as standard, to ensure all new developments are as energy efficient as possible. These choices are contributing to substantial financial benefits for both the company and its customers.
