Architects Awarded Honorary Degrees

Three leading architects from across the UK have been awarded honorary degrees by Scottish universities.

Architect, Norman Foster was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws LLM by the University of Dundee for his "huge array of striking buildings over the past four decades."

The laureation address was made by the Dean of Architecture, Professor Graeme Hutton at a ceremony. Foster said he was "delighted" to receive the award.

Meanwhile, Andy MacMillan and Isi Metzstein, formerly of architecture practice Gillespie Kidd and Coia, were awarded honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) conferred by the University of Glasgow on behalf of The Glasgow School of Art at Bute Hall, the University of Glasgow.


Andy and Isi were chosen for their impact on Scottish architecture, their considerable academic involvement and the revival of interest in their work following the exhibition Gillespie Kidd and Coia: Architecture 1956 - 1987 at The Lighthouse, Scotland's centre for Architecture and Design.

Professor Seona Reid, Director of The Glasgow School of Art, said: "I am delighted to announce that Andy MacMillan and Isi Metzstein have received honorary Doctor of Letters' (D. Litts) conferred by the University of Glasgow on behalf of The Glasgow School of Art."

Isi said: "I was pleasantly surprised to be announced as one of the recipients of an honorary degree this year. I am extremely grateful that my work and effort over the years has been acknowledged in this way."
