Council And Constabulary Condemn Theft Of Manhole Covers

The Highland Council and Northern Constabulary have condemned an increase in theft of manhole covers and gully covers in the Invergordon and Alness area.

Over the last 10 days more than 25 covers have been stolen which could cost around £12,500 to replace.

Graham Mackenzie, Community Works Manager with Highland Council’s TEC Services said: "The health and safety of the public are our main concern and a missing cover could cause serious injury to any road user including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. As soon as we were notified, the Council took immediate action to cone off the manholes where covers were stolen.

"The type of injury which could be sustained by either cyclists or pedestrians by falling into either a gully or manhole could lead to a fatality particularly where children are involved.

"The cost of replacement of the covers is significant and every pound spent on replacing stolen covers means a reduction in the amount of money we have available for normal maintenance. We urge anyone with any information to contact Northern Constabulary."

Chief Inspector Paul Eddington of Northern Constabulary commented: "These incidents are not only thefts but reckless acts that can affect the safety of members of the public. We would urge anyone who has seen anything suspicious and any scrap metal dealers who have been approached to contact Police in Dingwall on 01349 862444 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."
