New Sustainable Homes Rejuvenate Kilmun

Fyne Homes subsidiary company, Fyne Initiatives, has recently launched four new homes, constructed from local products by local people.

Located at the head of the Holy Loch in Kilmun these new spacious family homes are aimed at first time home buyers to help them get their foot on the property ladder.

The new Kilmun homes are available for sale through Scottish Government LIFT - Low-cost Initiative for First Time buyer's scheme that allows first time buyers to purchase a share of the equity, usually between 60% and 80%.

There are two, three bedroomed semi-detached homes and two, four bedroomed detached homes.

The Kilmun scheme is the first in the area under the Forestry Land Scheme initiative where by the Forestry Commision sells surplus land to registered social landlords and other housing bodies, where there is a high demand for housing but land for building is scarce.

The National Forestry Land scheme makes surplus woodland and forestry available for the construction of affordable housing on condition that maximum use is made of Scottish timber in the construction. As a result, people benefit from Scotland's surplus forestry and woodland, communities are strengthened and the environment protected.

The homes, designed by Iain Campbell of Oban-based CP Architects, have been built using Scottish larch timber frames and cladding. Scottish wood will also be used to heat the houses and each property will feature a wood burning stove, supplied by Oban based Backswoodsman as well as an outdoor wood store for drying fuel. The wood burning stoves will provide hot water heating backed up by an immersion heater and electric panel heater.

Windows have also been sized carefully to ensure that large windows are located on the south wall to increase solar gain and smaller windows on the north wall to reduce heat loss.

Alan McDougall, Director of Fyne Homes Housing Association, said: "The Kilmun development marks another great achievement for Fyne Homes and I am delighted with results of the completed development."
