Work To Start On Kirriemuir Sports Facility

Work will start in the spring to provide Kirriemuir with an all weather sports facility.

Angus Council has been working with the Kirriemuir Community Sports Association to provide the facility at Webster's High School for the benefit of the burgh and the surrounding communities for the past four years.

The project has come to fruition thanks to a massive fund raising drive by the association which saw the local community raise just over £69,000 towards the project with financial backing of £250,000 from sportscotland.

As well as the donation of the land, support has been provided from the council on issues such as potential sources of external funding for the feasibility and design aspects of the project, construction phase funding sources, planning application process plus technical and professional advice.

Angus Council will maintain, manage and operate the completed all weather complex on behalf of the community, as an extension to the range of facilities already available at the adjacent Webster's Sports Centre.

The facility will be suitable for varieties of sports including hockey, football, netball and multi-sports activities and can be used all year round. Thanks to floodlighting it will be available in the evenings, and the synthetic surface will measure approximately 47 meters wide by 74 meters long.

News that work on the complex is scheduled to start in May was welcomed by Education convener Peter Nield who said: "I am delighted that by working in partnership with the local community we have been able to provide this new complex, which complements the work being undertaken to enhance the accommodation at Webster's High School. I would also like to congratulate the local community on their fantastic funding raising towards this project."

Ian Fraser, chair of the Kirriemuir Community Sports Association, thanked the various businesses, organisations and individuals within the local community for their financial donations made during the successful year long fundraising campaign which raised just over £69,000.

"My personal thanks to all the members of the association for the support and commitment they have given over the last five years. As a community, we should all be proud of what we have achieved."
