Following the decision to replace the ferries operating on the Rothesay to Wemyss Bay route with larger vessels, Argyll and Bute Council decided to upgrade the shore facilities to match their increased capacity and berthing needs.
The works involved installing a new ferry berth on the front of the pier and the installation of a new adjustable linkspan bridge to connect the vessels to the pier for loading and unloading of vehicles, as well as a new gangway for foot passengers.
An increased mustering area was also provided for vehicles waiting to board the ferry and the opportunity was taken to separate vehicular and passenger traffic by means of a dedicated route for passengers over the existing Mid Pier to a new lifting bridge. This links the Mid Pier to the pier building where ticketing and waiting facilities are located.

Council Leader, Councillor Dick Walsh, said: "The redevelopment of Rothesay Pier and Harbour will be a huge benefit to the people of Bute and will hopefully bring much needed tourist revenue into the island.
"I am delighted that two years of hard work have come to fruition and today we now have 21st Century pier facilities we can be proud of."
Funding for the works was provided by the Council, the Scottish Government and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson said: "I am delighted to witness the completion of the Rothesay Pier and Harbour redevelopment. This substantial investment will deliver first class facilities for the people of Bute and visiting tourists. It is a vital boost for the area and will make a valuable contribution to both the local and national economy. "
Lawrie Sinclair, Managing Director of CalMac Ferries Ltd, which provides daily services between Rothesay and Wemyss Bay, said: "The customer experience at Rothesay is much improved, as is the access on and off the ships. Further works to upgrade the terminal building, including ticketing facilities and the waiting room, are planned which will complete the overall package."
