Styrofoam Supports Aberdeen Regeneration Project

Twenty lorry loads of Styrofoam roofing insulation have been making their way into the heart of Aberdeen over the winter as work continues on the £250m Union Square regeneration project.

14,000 m2 of 140mm thick Roofmate SL-A from Dow Building Solutions is being supplied to principal roofing contractor BriggsAmasco, which is supporting Miller Construction on the Hammerson-backed development.

Union Square is set to transform the heart of Aberdeen, and will be the largest mixed-use development in Scotland, containing 56 retail units, 12 catering outlets and the largest multiplex cinema in Aberdeen. The project, set to open in Autumn 2009, will also contain a civic square and hotel with conference facilities.

Roofmate SL-A is a Styrofoam extruded polystyrene solution is developed to improve thermal efficiency of buildings and will help developers achieve BREEAM accreditation. The insulation boards are manufactured with recycled CO2, bringing further environmental benefits beyond energy efficiency.

"We regularly use Styrofoam products as they not only deliver the excellent insulating properties our clients are looking for, they are easy to cut and install, making them incredibly efficient materials to work with," said Tony Lawther, Manager of BriggsAmasco's Glasgow branch.

"The boards are also lightweight, easy to stack on a busy construction site and have low water absorption, meaning our installation specialists find them very practical and user-friendly."
