Demonstration Projects: Focus On Insulation And Damp-Proofing In Buildings

The Scottish Construction Centre (SCC) in conjunction with Edinburgh Best Practice

Club has organised a presentation of Demonstration Projects on insulation and damp-proofing in buildings.

The presentation took place in Sanderson Building of University of Edinburgh on 18 February 2009.

This event provided an opportunity to hear about and peer-assess these innovative projects on Insulation and Damp in Buildings.

The enthusiastic approach from the participants and their willingness to take part in future meetings showed they want to be actively involved in the process of innovation in the construction industry.

More workshops like this will be organised in the near future to explore other innovative projects.

The session was lead by Doug Forbes, Demonstration Projects Co-ordinator of SCC. Three speakers gave their presentations that were followed by series of questions from the participants.

Mohamed Imbabi from Environment Building Partnership Ltd presented "Dynamic Breathing Walls" where he demonstrated the final presentation on the use of the cells in a housing project.

The results the Demonstration produced promises 32% reduction in TER (Target Emission Rate), 80% reduction in embodied carbon, 6% increase in usable floor area, significantly reduced carbon footprint and energy bills and significantly improved IAQ (Indoor Air Quality).

Malcolm Mulheron of Spirare Ltd provided an overview of the "Anti-damp Nozzle Nubs" and spoke about their implementation.

The nozzle nubs are sustainable ceramic damp–control system which reduces moisture in walls by using natural ventilation.

Finally John Reid of Building Research Establishment Scotland gave a presentation on the bigger picture of insulation and analysed the approaches to insulation design. He outlined some of the key aspects of insulation design which may actually prove counter productive in insulating buildings under certain circumstances.

Representatives of the local authorities, universities, insurance companies, health service and private and public companies attended the event.
