Building Bridges

Pupils from Hermitage Primary School, Helensburgh are getting the opportunity to build their very own bridge.

As part of the activities associated with the National Science and Engineering Week, a representative from the Institute of Civil Engineers will be visiting the school, taking with him the parts needed to construct a 13 metre bridge.

Pupils from other local schools will be able to join those from Hermitage Primary classes 6 and 7 in a workshop which will look at bridge design and their role in society.


Councillor Isobel Strong, Argyll and Bute Council Spokesperson for Education said: "This is a great idea, both innovative and informative. Bridges, and the lack of them, play a crucial part in the lives of people in Argyll and Bute, and indeed throughout Scotland.

"I’m sure that the children will enjoy the challenge of building their own bridge and make the most of the opportunity to ask questions of a Civil Engineer."

Headteacher, Lorna Jackson said this is an excellent opportunity for the children to learn more about bridges: "We are delighted to welcome John McPartlin, from ICE to Hermitage as a part of National Science and Engineering Week, and pleased that he has agreed to support the children in their bridge topic."
