£1.4m School Extension Opens

The £1.4m extension to Bankton Primary School in Livingston has been officially opened.

West Lothian executive councillor for education, Andrew Miller lead the opening ceremony.

The extension provides two new classrooms, a new sports hall and changing facilities with an integral sound system and stage lighting, a parents' room and a new nursery/wraparound facility for 40 children.

Councillor Andrew Miller said: "I am absolutely delighted to open this extension. The new facilities are fantastic and I'm sure they will have already made a huge difference to the school.

The new sports hall provides "enhanced facilities" for the school such as sound and lighting equipment allowing it to be used for assembly, events and performances. The existing hall can be used solely as a dining room.

The nursery/wraparound rooms have been designed from a child's point of view with a direct connection to the playground, to allow free movement between the inside and outside spaces.

Head Teacher Marlyn Taylor added: "We are all thrilled with our extension. The new classrooms will be used by our P1 pupils and the other facilities will be enjoyed by the whole school."

School captain Jennifer Thomson, 11, said: "Having the new nursery is wonderful for the young children and having the new hall has made such a difference to us. We can now all have assembly in the one hall."

The work was managed by the council's Construction Services team; Architect - ARCADE Architects; Structural Engineers - Wren & Bell; Quantity Surveyor - David Adamson Chartered Surveyors; Mechanical Engineer - MDN (Eng) Ltd; Electrical Engineer - McLeman QS Network; Main Contractor - SIM Building Group Ltd.
