New Braes Library Opens Officially In Polmont

Meadowbank Library in Polmont has been opened officially.

It is the first additional public library to be built by Falkirk Council for some years and the first to serve the Braes community.

Guests at the official opening included representatives of local schools and organisations.

Designed by Falkirk Council architects and built at a cost of £1.1m, it is filled with completely new stock including, books, dvds, music cds and magazines.

The new library features wood panelling and wooden flooring, a high ceiling with an airy atmosphere and lots of natural light from full-length windows.

Every age is catered for: there's a bright and attractive children's section, special teenage zone and a comfortable refreshment area where library users can enjoy a hot drink while they read the newspapers.

There is free Internet access throughout the library and a dedicated computer suite where classes in basic PC and Internet skills can be offered. The library provides free Wi-Fi access for people to use their own laptops.

Teenagers can relax with the latest fiction or graphic novels, try specially designed "gaming" chairs for PlayStation 3 or Wii games or enjoy their favourite music at the CD listening posts.

And there are books, on every subject for every age... including a good selection in large print, on tape, cd and in mp3 format.

There's lots more to library life: Meadowbank offers an exciting range of events like storytelling, craft and storytelling sessions for children as well as attractions for grown-ups like author visits.

"It's a matter of real pride to Falkirk Council that at a time when traditional libraries are closing across the UK we are investing in new ones fit for the 21st century." said Councillor Adrian Mahoney, Convener of Leisure, Tourism and Community.

"As well as replacing Bonnybridge and Larbert Libraries with brand new, well-equipped buildings, we also look forward to doing the same in Denny and Grangemouth Libraries. These are to be replaced as part of the town centre regeneration plans."
