Independent Report Backs Council Vision

An independent report has backed the City of Edinburgh Council for its vision over the future development of Scotland's capital as outlined in the Edinburgh City Local Plan.

The Council has also been commended for the way it handled public objections to the plan - first published in 2007.

Two reporters from the Scottish Government were tasked with leading the public inquiry relating to 150 issues that were disputed.


The 400-page report of the three month investigation has now been published and one of the striking features is the extent to which the reporters have endorsed the position of the Council and the steps taken to listen to objections.

The Council will now consider the recommendations in the report and decide what steps need to be taken next. These will be debated later in the year.

Councillor Jim Lowrie, City Planning Convener, said the Edinburgh City Local Plan would form the basis of day to day decision making.

He said: "This is an important document that will shape Edinburgh's future.

"We must encourage necessary investment, regeneration and new development in the right places while protecting our environment and our heritage."
