Winter Light Night

A free programme of events that will show Dundee in a different light could illuminate the city later this year.

The "winter light night" will be part of the One City Many Discoveries campaign and take place on Friday November 27.

Will Dawson Convener of Dundee City Council's city development committee said: "Similar events run in other cities have proved to be a successful showcase for the architecture, streetscape and facilities on offer and we felt that it would be a perfect way of highlighting some of the best things about Dundee.

"I am very much looking forward to being one of the 25,000 people we expect to take advantage of a wide and varied programme including street entertainment and retail opportunities."

As well as a £50,000 commitment from Dundee City Council, bids for funding and sponsorship to boost that figure are also being made.

Celebrating culture, heritage, community and ambition for Dundee the night itself will be a mix of sound, light and art.

A street market, performance, art and a children's torchlight procession will keep visitors entertained as they move around the city centre between four key locations.

Planned activity will take place at Wellgate, City Square/Overgate, McManus Galleries and the Cultural Quarter.

The winter light night will conclude with a firework display set to music.

City Councillors will be given details of the event in a report to go to the city development committee on Monday August 24.
