Airyhall School Opens

The state-of-the-art Airyhall School opened its doors to pupils on Thursday August 20.

Airyhall Primary School.This is the second school in Aberdeen City Council's £120 million 3Rs project to be completed.

Airyhall and Braeside schools came together under one head teacher at the Braeside site while the new school was constructed.

The new school can accommodate up to 360 P1-P7 pupils and a nursery, it also incorporates an all-weather pitch and community facilities.

The innovative reorganise, renovate and rebuild public/private partnership scheme is delivering seven new primaries, two new secondary schools and one refurbished primary school.

Significant community and sports facilities are a key part of each school-build project.

All are being built to exacting levels of sustainability in their design, construction and operation. Outdoor spaces are designed to provide safe, stimulating places for learning, play, socialising.

Joyce Hammond and her class of P3'sEvery school will also be provided with a fully equipped kitchen for preparing meals to support the city council's healthy-eating Hungry for Success programme.

All boast Scandinavian standards of insulation, an innovative lighting management system linked to ambient levels of daylight, under-floor heating, natural ventilation, the ability to conserve and use rainwater and sustainable urban drainage systems.

Council Leader John Stewart said: "It is very satisfying to see another 3Rs school opening.I am sure that the youngsters, parents and staff will be thrilled with their modern new school.

"A great deal of work has gone into keeping this important project on track and I congratulate everybody involved."

3Rs Project Board Chairman Councillor Kevin Stewart said: "Airyhall School is a wonderful building created to the highest of standards offering our youngsters the best possible learning environment.

"This is the second school to open as this innovative project surges forward reshaping our school estate.

"I believe that this project sets the standard for modern education in Scotland and will offer our youngsters the very best of facilities for years to come."

Construction work on the new Bucksburn and Cults Academies is continuing. They expected to be finished on schedule in October.
