'City Of Discovery' Gets £3m Transport Investment

Construction News Image
A multi-million pound improvement scheme on the A92 in Dundee will be delivered through a partnership that reduces the programme of works by one month.

The £3 million upgrades, which start on 8 September for ten weeks, are being funded through Transport Scotland and Dundee City Council.

The programme will see the national transport agency's trunk road maintenance works on the A92 East Dock Street combined with early phases of Dundee City Council's ambitious Central Waterfront redevelopment.

This will include a pumped drainage system to alleviate flooding in the area and new traffic signals at the Trades Lane junction.

Traffic management has been organised to minimise the duration of the works whilst maximising the safety of both the travelling public and the workforce.

Nevertheless significant congestion is inevitable on all approaches to Dundee as a result of the works.

To assist motorists plan their journeys a dedicated Twitter page 'A92_EastDock_St' has been set up to give regular journey planning tweets.

David Stafford, Project Manager Transport Scotland said: "The A92 is a vital trunk road, connecting communities from Fife to Angus, and crosses one of Scotland’s busiest urban locations.

"Within Dundee it is used by around 27,400 vehicles daily and, having become worn over time, now requires essential upgrade work.

"In the longer term this work will reduce the need for future roadworks however there will be major delays at peak periods and we strongly advise road users to switch to public transport where available.

" If you must use your vehicle then leave plenty of extra time for your journey and use all the available travel planning information particularly the updates on the Traffic Scotland website and our dedicated Twitter page."

Eddie Ross, Consultancy Manager, BEAR Scotland said: "We have undergone extensive planning and consultation with the local community along with Dundee City Council, Transport Scotland and Tayside Police to minimise delays and we will continually monitor the traffic situation and feed this information to Traffic Scotland to help journey planning.

"However, due to the fact this trunk road runs through one of Scotland's largest cities, delays and heavy disruption is unavoidable at peak periods. That is why we are urging drivers to get out of their cars and onto public transport where ever possible," he said.
