The opening of a new multi-million pound retail and leisure development has been warmly welcomed by Aberdeen City Council.
The council has been working closely with the developers of Union Square to maximise the benefits it will bring to the city.
Council Leader John Stewart said: "The opening of Union Square gives a clear signal that the city remains a vibrant and successful destination.
"The number of retailers new not only to Aberdeen, but to Scotland, demonstrates the potential in our local economy and confidence in Aberdeen's ability to leading Scotland's recovery.
"I particularly welcome the work that has been done to create new job opportunities for local people and the way communities have been engaged with the project."
Aberdeen City Council Chief Executive Sue Bruce added: "Union Square's opening is a major event for Aberdeen, helping to secure its place as a major shopping, leisure and tourism destination.
"This £275 million development, which has generated about 1,000 new jobs for Aberdeen, promises great things for the local economy and I look forward to seeing it and other sections of the retail and leisure industry in Aberdeen continuing to do well."
Union Square opened its doors to the public at noon today. It is the first development of its kind to be created in the city for over 20 years. It is one of the largest city-centre developments in Scotland and is expected to attract shoppers from throughout the Grampian region and further afield.
The council has been working closely with Union Square developer Hammerson to support the successful completion of the project.
