Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Transport Scotland as engineering advisor on the Borders Railway project.

This railway scheme has been introduced by Transport Scotland to improve connectivity between Edinburgh and the Midlothian and Scottish Borders regions.

The project will re-establish a passenger railway service in an area that has not been served by a mainline railway in over 40 years.

Proposed improvements to services include the extension of timetabled passenger trains between the existing Newcraighall station in Edinburgh through Midlothian to Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders.

The scheme will also help to connect communities along the route with the addition of seven new stations and it is hoped that this will improve access to jobs, education and health and leisure facilities for those communities.

The Borders Railway Project is managed by Transport Scotland with support from key stakeholders including The City of Edinburgh, Midlothian and Scottish Borders Councils. As engineering advisor, Mott MacDonald is one of a number of specialist advisors involved in the scheme.

Stuart Cull, Mott MacDonald's project manager commented: "This contract win reaffirms Mott MacDonald's strong reputation and track-record in world class railway engineering design and advisory services. We look forward to working closely with Transport Scotland and helping to deliver on this important project for Scotland."

Mott MacDonald’s role includes the provision of multi-disciplinary engineering advisory support during formal procurement of the Borders Railway design, build, finance and maintain (DBFM) contract. In addition, the consultancy will support delivery of advance works contracts and provide notified body and independent checking and assurance services.
