John Sisk & Son Ltd, one of the largest construction groups in UK and Ireland, and a leading hotel and leisure building contractor has successfully integrated modular bedrooms supplied by Corus Living Solutions to complete a 198-bedroom hotel in Glasgow city centre for innovative hotel company citizenM’s first UK location.
The combination of Sisk’s in-depth hotel market knowledge and Corus’ modular production efficiencies saw the scheme delivered using proven off-site construction techniques. Located next to the landmark Theatre Royal and on the site of the old STV Studios, the hotel is conveniently located for travellers visiting the city centre.
All 198 bedrooms were built offsite at the Corus Living Solutions factory in North Wales, before being transported to Glasgow to be fitted in place. The modular construction method can deliver many benefits over traditional building methods, including lower project cost, earlier completion time and improved quality and environmental building performance.
Inside the hotel, electronic kiosks offer self service check in/out instead of a reception desk. All rooms are doubles with super sized beds, power rain showers and feature a moodpad, controlling all the functions of the room – from temperature to the colour of the lighting.
CitizenM has ambitions for global expansion and Glasgow is the third of 20 planned hotels over the next 5 years in locations including London, New York, Milan, Paris and Zurich. The concept behind the chain is to provide the modern day traveller, value combined with stylish design. The company’s mantra is affordable luxury for the people.
The Glasgow scheme was designed by the award winning Concrete Architectural Associates, who have incorporated full height windows set in dark granite along with an exterior artwork installation to create its distinctive concept.
Robin Herron, Pre-Construction Director, John Sisk & Son Ltd commented: “John Sisk & Son Ltd. has successfully managed the modular build process and benefited citizenM as a hotels innovator, from the initial design stage down to the projected final delivery, bringing the lowest project cost, earlier completion, improved quality and building performance.
“We have worked with a number of hotel providers and citizenM is a genuinely original and unique concept. Sisk is delighted to have worked with a company whose philosophy of high quality, reliable and affordable solutions we share.”
Richard Jones, General Manager, Corus Living Solutions continued: “We are proud to have provided a solution for citizenM that is designed, manufactured and constructed in the UK, but that also delivers a refreshing product responding to the needs of its target market. The budget hotel industry relies on delivery performance to determine profitability and modular construction can help support this every time.”
Carel van Houte, Chief Development Officer, citizenM hotels added: “I would like to congratulate John Sisk & Son Ltd on the superb build of our first hotel in the UK. citizenM redefines both the affordable and the luxury hotel standard. Guests are treated to cutting edge hotel rooms at the height of functional design, created by an award winning design agency.
“There are no marble fountains or concierge desks in the citizenM Glasgow lobby. Instead you’ll see stylishly designed spaces which come in the form of contemporary living rooms, furnished with the latest collection of iconic Vitra and Eames Furniture.”
