'Steady Progress' On Dundee Waterfront

A report detailing progress on Dundee's Central Waterfront project is to be discussed at the Policy and Resources Committee on Monday 25 October 2010.

Leader of the Administration, Ken Guild said: "Steady progress is being made with the regeneration of the Central Waterfront in Dundee. All of the major infrastructure work is being delivered on time and within budget.

"It is our ambition to reconnect the city to its historic waterfront setting and lay the foundations for a high quality and radical development that will help move the city forward physically, economically and culturally.

"We are going to demolish Tayside House and the Olympia Centre. We are going to create tree lined boulevards and a major new civic space.

"The new waterfront will be a place for our citizens to live, work and enjoy their leisure time.

"We are starting to see our vision take shape with the completion of the first two stages of the project and work is now well underway with phase three."

The first stage saw the re-alignment of the Western Road, improvements to the Greenmarket junction and the removal of the overhead walkway to the railway station.

The second stage saw the strengthening of the Dock Street Tunnel to allow for the construction of the proposed northern boulevard and included the reconstruction of part of Dock Street and Gellatly Street.

The third stage has so far seen the completion of the Greenmarket Multi storey car park, improvements to the Trades Lane junction and the construction of a storm water tank to deal with the surface water from the proposed new road network and future buildings at the central waterfront.

Work has now started on the first phase of replacing the ramps at the Tay Road Bridge. This contract will take 18 months to complete.

A contract to design a new station concourse and replacement bridge over the railway line at Dundee Rail Station is to be let in the near future. This work is necessary to implement the grid layout at the west end of the central waterfront and to enable future redevelopment of the station buildings.

A site within the Central Waterfront development has been defined for the proposed V&A at Dundee and the winner of an international architectural competition is due to be decided next month.

Councillor Guild who is also Chair of the Board of the Dundee Waterfront Project said: "The redevelopment of the Central Waterfront is a key priority for the city council and its partners. The project has widespread support within the city and we are determined to deliver on our ambitious vision for the future."
