A new housing development by a leading provider of housing, care and community services for older people in need or at risk has been selected as the best Social Housing Development of the year in the Herald's Property Awards for Scotland.
Bield's development at Pearce Street, Govan is a seven-storey building providing 27 spacious retirement flats for older people.
The site, close to Govan Cross and good transport links, is ideally situated for the older generation.
The modern and innovative design impressed the judges, who described the building as a "simply stunning addition to Govan's rich architectural heritage."
As well as commending the contemporary design they were impressed by the extremely good use of the site, which is situated in the heart of historic Govan.
It inhabits a space opposite the listed Pearce Institute and its modern design is complementary to its surroundings as opposed to a mirror image of them.
The spacious building's interior resembles a modern boutique hotel, and on the fourth floor there is a double height open loggia.
The flats themselves offer stunning views across the Clyde to the new Transport Museum and each flat is completely barrier free, including level access showers.
They also benefit from high levels of security, including a 24 hour link to Bield's alarm centre, Response24, video door entry and CCTV.
Bield's Depute Chief Executive, Alister McDonald, said: "Housing for older people does not mean old-fashioned design. We are delighted with the contemporary look and feel achieved by our architects, Austin-Smith:Lord. And we are equally delighted with the reaction of the tenants and the popularity of the development. 100% of respondents were satisfied with their new homes when we asked them.
"I want to thank the tenants for letting the judges look round their flats and for being the best advocates for the development. I also want to thank Austin-Smith:Lord and the rest of the design team, and the main contractor, CCG Scotland Ltd, for the tremendous job they have done."
