Ayr College Takes Flight

Young people studying aircraft engineering have a state-of-the-art facility at their fingertips following a £2.7 million investment for a centre at Ayr College.

The hangar-based facility, part-funded by the Scottish Funding Council, was opened today by Minister for Learning Alasdair Allan and newly appointed Minister for Youth Employment Angela Constance on her first official visit in her new role.

Young people who choose to study aircraft engineering will now have access to the very latest technology, as well as improved links to higher education and key sector employers such as BAe who have been involved in course design.

Ms Constance said: "My appointment yesterday as a dedicated minister for youth employment marks the start of a new phase in tackling what is clearly a significant challenge for our economy and our country as a whole.

"The latest figures published today show that 88.9 per cent of young people are leaving school and going into positive destinations, an increase of two per cent on last year. It is good news that young people continue to enter work, training and education in such high numbers, particularly in the current economic climate, but we must keep up momentum.

"Today's announcement of an additional £15 million to support our colleges in delivering education in regional groups builds on £30 million last week to support youth employment. Alongside our guarantee of a place in training or education for every 16 to 19 year old through Opportunities for All I am confident that we will be able to significantly improve outcomes for Scotland's young people."

Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland's languages Dr Allan added: "This new aircraft engineering centre at Ayr College is an excellent example of an institution improving the options available for young people. It is also testament to the role science can play in training and employment, which I am particularly pleased to note given that I now have specific responsibility for science.

"Not only is this brand new facility an example of how hands on learning and cutting edge technology can enhance skills in the sector, the links with key employers like BAe, Loganair and Ryanair, as well as higher education will give students the chance to take some firm steps into employment in one of the Scottish Government's key sectors.

"This approach is also very much in line with our plans to reform post 16 education. By aligning themselves with local employers, colleges can create opportunities for their students and make a substantial contribution to the economy in their area."

The Scottish Government's innovative Engage for Education site allows users to read blogs from Ministers, post comments and get involved in workshops on issues relating to education.
