Flats To Be Pulled Down In Glasgow

Flats are to be demolished across Glasgow and new homes built in their place.

After consulting with tenants, the Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) has decided to pull down seven blocks of flats, across Royston, Drumchapel and Cranhill, by 2016.

Others, in Levernwood and Cranhill, will be refurbished with new kitchens and bathrooms, and damp will be treated.

External overcladding, repairs to windows and rewiring will also be carried out.

Hundreds of new social homes will then be built in the city, as part of the final stages of a £1.2bn 12-year housing plan.

It is the culmination of a review of every home inherited by GHA at stock transfer in 2003.

Tenants who live in houses that are to be demolished will be given a choice GHA housing in their area or across Glasgow.

More than 500 people will be affected.

Alex McGuire, GHA’s Executive Director of Development and Regeneration, said: "We consulted closely with residents in each of these neighbourhoods. Every area was different and we’ve brought forward plans which we think best meets the needs now and in the future of that community. Where we've decided to keep homes we’ll carry out major refurbishment work to make the houses modern, comfortable and attractive. In some cases, where demand for properties is much lower and the flats are too expensive to maintain, we've decided to go ahead with demolition to make way for future regeneration work. It also means that every GHA community now has certainty over its long-term future."

The plans have been approved by residents.
