Invitation To Shape Scotland's Architectural Future

A consultation into the future of Scotland's architecture has been announced.

Ministers want to know how to promote high quality design, achieve a low-carbon economy, meet communities' needs and encourage public interest in built heritage.

A document released by the Scottish Government stated: "We want to encourage the creation of buildings and places with which people can identify and which succeed in bringing together activities and services for people to fulfill their potential in business and society."

The report also said that the architecture and design industry generates about £1.3bn a year for Scotland's economy, as well as contributing to construction.

Responses will inform a new architecture policy for Scotland, which is currently in the planning stages.

Launching the consultation, Fiona Hyslop said: "Good architecture and design is important to Scotland, making a significant contribution to our society, our economy and our communities. This consultation on our new architecture and placemaking policy will, quite literally, shape Scotland's future. It is an opportunity to build a better world and I urge everyone to have their say."

The policy will cover architecture, urban design and placemaking and consultation themes include sustainable economic growth, Scotland’s future, the cultural value of architecture and embedding built environment design into wider policy agendas.

Responses are invited by e-mail to architecture@scotland.gsi.gov.uk by September 7 at the latest.

The consultation form is available at www.scotland.gov.uk/consultations.
