Glasgow Supermarkets Planning Battle Intensifies

Construction News Image
Supermarket chiefs are attempting to garner support for an out-of-town development in Glasgow after council planners recommended it for refusal.

Sainsbury's held a public meeting yesterday to speak to local traders and the general public, about its multi-million pound plans for a disused bus depot in Motherwell, on the corner of Hamilton Road and Airbles Road.

And next Wednesday, North Lanarkshire councillors will vote on whether to follow their planners' recommendations or give the store the go-ahead instead.

Plans are now on display for a rival bid, which would be a supermarket on stilts.

It would sit on stilts over a car park at the rear, preserving 450 existing parking spaces at its Brandon Parade East site.

Businessman Tom Tyler, who co-owns a property company which owns and manages the Brandon shopping centre in the city centre, has put the plans on display at Unit 99 on Brandon Parade.

Officials will be in attendance to answer questions from the public.

Mr Tyler said: "I am sure that members of the public who take part in our consultation will realise that there is no need for Sainsbury's to develop a site outside the town centre."

Planners have warned councillors that if they give consent to Sainsbury's then the new store will have a "significant" impact on the town centre and will breach the existing Glasgow and Clyde Valley Strategic Development Plan and the local draft plan.
