Edinburgh Castle has been voted the top UK Heritage attraction for the second year running.
While controversy continues over the extension to Scotland’s modern parliament building at Holyrood, it seems one of Edinburgh’s oldest constructions continues to be at the forefront of the city’s landscape.
The Castle won the award at the British Travel Awards ceremony in London last night.
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs said: "The Castle was voted the Top UK Heritage Attraction at the BTA Awards last year, so to win a gold award this year when it has been a challenging time for the tourism sector, is an incredible achievement for Scotland. It also shows how Edinburgh Castle continues to fascinate and attract visitors from around the world.
"Edinburgh Castle has a key role to play in Scotland’s tourist industry, which is a vital part of our economy. Not only is it a pivotal part of our history and heritage, but it also hosts spectacular events from the world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Summer concerts, to the fantastic fireworks at the end of the Edinburgh International Festival and at Hogmanay to herald the new year."
Nick Finnigan, Edinburgh Castle’s Executive Manager, was presented with the gold award.
He said: "This year has been another eventful period in the castle’s history with the arrival of the Olympic torch and the spectacular lighting of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacon against the dramatic backdrop of the castle.
"There is so much to see at the castle - the Scottish Crown Jewels, which are amongst the oldest regalia in Europe, the Stone of Destiny and St Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh, as well as our costumed performers who bring history to life.
"We are now looking forward to a host of Christmas activities at the castle with our costumed performers who bring history to life and carol concerts in the magnificent surroundings of the Great Hall."
