Construction Begins On South Lanarkshire Primary Schools

The construction of six primary schools in South Lanarkshire is set to begin, with Morgan Sindall named to helm the project.

The latest section of the £150m programme will see the firm begin Phase 2, Tranche 2 of the framework.

Morgan Sindall has just completed 13 schools in the first tranche of the plan.

Now work will begin on the £4.8m Carstairs Village Primary School campus and the £4.6m Carstairs Junction Primary School on Coronation Street.

It is thought both schools will be completed by summer 2013.

The developments will use sustainable green technology such as biomass boilers.

Morgan Sindall will also be working on Woodside Primary School, Newton Primary School, Machanhill Primary School and Forth Primary School.

The firm is working with Kier and Lend Lease on the 30 primary schools to be built over a four year period.

The project is part of South Lanarkshire Council’s £812m Schools Modernisation Programme.

The scheme will see all 129 of the area’s primary schools rebuilt by 2016.

Eddie Carr, area director for Morgan Sindall in Scotland, said: "Our appointment to the framework is a real reflection of our experience and expertise in the sector, which follows our work on 19 secondary schools for the same Council as part of their £320m Schools Modernisation Programme which completed in 2009.

"Scotland is already well ahead of other areas in terms of replacing schools and South Lanarkshire is one of the first councils to improve its educational stock across the board with more than 74 primary schools and 19 secondary schools being completed to date. It’s a real privilege to be working alongside such a forward thinking and proactive council."
