Scottish Government Backs Midlothian 'Tourist Village'

The Scottish government has backed a planning application to build a £13m 'tourism village' in Midlothian.

Midlothian Council has welcomed the decision.

It is thought the new development by Oakbridge Property will create up to 300 jobs in the region during construction and within the operation of the retail centre, visitor centre, hotel, shops, restaurants and cafes.

The new development at Fordel on the A68, south of Dalkeith, received planning permission approval in principle in June 2011.


But the government then delayed the application because it was felt the proposals were contrary to the Edinburgh and the Lothians Structure Plan and the Midlothian Local Plan.

But now it has been announced the development can go ahead as long as certain conditions are met.

Councillor Jim Bryant, cabinet member with responsibility for economic development, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the news that this development can now go ahead.

"This is a significant milestone in nurturing economic recovery for the area. We are confident this is the best location for this tourism village and we look forward to working with developers on this exciting project."
