George Square Shortlist Revealed

Six firms have been shortlisted in the search for designs to revamp Glasgow’s George Square.

35 companies had expressed interest in the £15m project to redevelop one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

But now six have been selected to submit designs before the New Year.

The architects on the short-list are French firm Agence Ter, James Corner Field Operations from the USA and the UK’s Burns + Nice, Gustafson Porter, JM Architects and John McAslan & Partners.


The designs will go on display and there will then be a consultation. Work is due to begin next year with phase one expected to be completed before the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The project will see 13 monuments in George Square relocated during the works. Some may not be returned.

The City Council will work with Historic Scotland to ensure the conservation of the statues.

The George Square development is part of a £390 Buchanan Quarter revamp which was given the go-ahead towards the end of October 2012.

Also included in the project are the upgrading of the Royal Concert Hall and Buchanan Street, the improving of access to Queen Street station and the strengthening of the Cathedral Street bridge.
