Ruthglen Land Regeneration Approved

Plans to regenerate industrial and business land on the outskirts of Ruthglen have been approved by South Lanarkshire Council.

The £15m regeneration will see work carried out on land around the former Shawfield Industrial Estate.

Meanwhile, councillors have also approved a £6m scheme to revamp a derelict factory site in Farmeloan Road in order to make it suitable again for business use.

South Lanarkshire Council is expecting both developments to attract additional investment and jobs to the area.


The first scheme will see the construction of a new National Business District at Shawfield, which could create up to 15,000 jobs, according to the Council.

Planning approval could mean more than 350,000 sq m of business space will be developed over the next 20 to 30 years.

A new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Clyde with links to Dalmarnock is also being planned, while proposals for a new Shawfield Cross on Glasgow Road would include a pedestrian-friendly civic square and links to the new bridge.

The proposals also include a new four-storey office building on the Farmeloan Road site, formerly home to the Monogram factory.

South Lanarkshire Council believes the building would have enough room to support about 210 jobs.
