Primary Schools Receive £40m Refurb Grant

Work is set to begin as early as next month on some 59 schools across Glasgow.

Nursery, primary and Additional Support for Learning (ASL) schools are all included as pat of the year one work plan.

The year one work plan has been designed to focus on themed investment that will have an immediate impact on the estate and the quality of the learning and teaching areas.

More than £40m of refurbishment work will be carried out within the first year. The works include the upgrading of roofs, exterior walls and decoration, playground and paths, fences and walls, drainage, dry rot, asbestos control and the removal of pigeon droppings.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, made the announcement. He said: "Our sole aim is to educate our children in buildings fit for purpose and I'm delighted to announce the first 59 schools and nurseries on year one of our five year, £250 million investment.

"This will not only benefit children and schools across Glasgow, this major capital investment will also provide a significant boost to the local economy. Education and jobs are both top priorities of this council and we will deliver on them."

A total of 36 primary schools, 18 nurseries and 5 ASL schools are among the first to benefit from the project. Details of the work plans for year two to five are expected to be announced in the autumn.
