BAE Systems' own the site in Bishopton and their ambitious project will see an 1,800 acre site transformed into a new community with around 2,500 new homes and 150,000sq m of commercial and employment related spaces within a business park. A sizeable community woodland park offering recreation and open space areas, a library, health centre and purpose-built primary school which also be constructed as part of the project.
The first phase of the development, which includes housebuilders CALA, Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey, will offer around 530 modern, energy efficient homes comprising of two, three, four and five bedrooms.
During his time as Leader of Renfrewshire Council, Mr Mackay played a key role in the overall development of the Bishopton initiative.
Following an on-site visit to see regeneration that is underway Mr Mackay said: "Seeing firsthand the progress that's being made in the initial phase of new housing at Dargavel Village was a great opportunity to see the commitment and drive from the developers to make the vision for the former Royal Ordnance Factory site in Bishopton become a reality.
"I'm delighted to hear from Taylor Wimpey that the demand for new homes at Dargavel Village is well ahead of expectations, and that crucially there's a strong interest from a wide range of buyers from both the local market as well as further afield."
The project is due for completion in 2026.
