Council Rejects Supermarket Development

Construction News Image
East Dunbartonshire Council has dismissed planning proposals to build a new supermarket in Bishopbriggs.

There had been proposals to construct a 72,000sq/ft Morrisons supermarket and associated residential development in the town centre, according to the Evening Times.

The plans would have occupied the site of the former Bishopbriggs High School. It would have been behind a screen of planting, while car parking was expected to have been moved back from Kirkintillock Road to create a 'civic space' for public events.

However, the proposals attracted 346 letters of objection from local residents and Councillors for East Dunbartonshire were unconvinced by the wider impact the project would have on the local economy.

It voted against the advice of planners by 15 to 7.

Among the issues raised by local residents, there were concerns over increased traffic, increased pollution, the scale of the development, and the effect the store would have on other shops within the town centre.

Planning Convener and North Bishopbriggs Councillor Billy Hendry said: "It became apparent that the new store would not link in well with the town centre.

"I felt it would have a detrimental effect on the amenity of the local area and felt it inappropriate that the service area would back on to an area of residential housing occupied by elderly people."

Morrisons already occupy a supermarket in the adjacent Triangle Shopping Centre.
