£4m Refurb For Historic Town House

The City of Inverness Area Committee are to discuss the potential conservation work of the city's town house next week.

On Monday, members of the Committee will be asked to approve preparatory work be undertaken in order to carry out repairs to the town house.

The cost of the project is estimated to cost around £4m.

The report is expected to highlight that significant work is needed to bring the 131-year-old building up to a good standard and to reduce the danger of falling masonry.

The last time major repairs to the stonework were undertaken was in 1956.

City Leader Councillor Ian Brown said: "The first task is to appoint a specialised design team to fully investigate phasing options for the work and to review the estimated costs. We will then be investigating what level of grant funding might be available and a report giving more details will be brought to a future City Committee.

"The Council has already shown its commitment to supporting a vibrant City by approving the City Centre Development Brief.

"The Town House is a historical key building in the heart of the city and the refurbishment work will ensure it can be fully operational and a focus for the city which people can enjoy for many years to come."
