Ambitious Regeneration Plans For Glasgow

Glasgow City Council has unveiled plans to continue its growth and regeneration of the area.

The new City Centre Strategy will lead to the creation of special districts in the city centre, with a focus on specific streets and will see the promotion and development of their unique character.

More than 50 proposed actions, developed in conjunction with public sector leaders and the business community, are now due to be taken forward to ensure the strategy is delivered over the next five years.

After receiving approval at the Executive Committee, the report will now go out to public consultation.

In the report, it recognised Glasgow city centre is at a critical stage in its development and therefore needs to respond to the changing nature of towns and cities. As a result, the new strategy takes on board the need to radically transform the use and purpose of the city centre.

The ambitious proposals also outline a long-term vision for Glasgow which will be delivered in two five-year plans, and builds on the success of the previous plan, which saw the creation of the International Financial Services District, the regeneration of the Merchant City and over £1bn of investment.

The districts which have been identified as key to the new plan, in terms of the promotion and development of their unique character or specialism, are:

  • Anderston

  • Broomielaw

  • Centre

  • Cowcaddens

  • Merchant City and High Street

  • Sauchiehall

  • St Enoch

  • Townhead

  • University and Cathedral

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "Glasgow city centre is a vibrant shopping area, which survey after survey ranks among the best in the UK. However we have to maintain the momentum and ensure that our city centre continues to grow and develop in the right direction creating jobs and opportunities for all Glaswegians.

"A strong city centre is a dynamic location to live, work, play and visit. We are very aware how important our city centre is in helping to attract new investment and business. This new strategy and action plan has come from a collaboration of the city's business leaders and public sector leaders and we believe will meet the challenges of maintaining and expanding our city's economic competitiveness and regeneration over the coming years.

"I am determined that this new way forward for Glasgow will see more new jobs, homes, business and residents living, working and enjoying a world class city centre."
