Falkirk Council has said two sites have been shortlisted for the new Carrongrange School.
The school, designed for pupils with a range of additional support needs, is currently located adjacent to Larbert High School.
The new sites in question are at Weedingshall in Polmont and at an area of land adjacent to Moray Primary in Grangemouth.
A team comprising of elected members, council officials, parent representatives and the head teacher of Carrongrange looked at more than 10 potential sites for the development before shortlisting a final three.
The Weedinghall site lies in a flat, easily developed site and is in a central location. It has previously been used as a school site and therefore would be acceptable within the local development plan.
The Moray Primary site is also easily accessible, but there could be potential planning considerations to overcome.
Education Spokesperson Councillor Alan Nimmo said: "We will be looking at these two sites very carefully over the next few months as there are many aspects to ensure we get the right location for this new facility.
"The school itself will be built to the highest possible standards and will allow pupils with additional support needs to learn in the best environment.
"Once we have come up with a final option we will look for the views of everyone concerned and adapt our plans accordingly wherever possible."
The next stage of the planning process will see the design team work with Renfrewshire Council to develop the specifications before going to consultation with the key stakeholders in the project.
