A total of 29 new family homes have been officially opened in Angus by Provost Councillor Helen Oswald.
The new properties in Wirren Gardens, Montrose, is Phase 1 of Angus Council's major new council housing development. It will also see a further 16 homes completed later this year. The houses will be offered for rent as part of the council's affordable house building programme, which will see the construction of more than 150 new homes between 2012 and 2015.
As part of the programme, one of the single storey houses has been furnished as a show-home so potential tenants can view the quality of the homes on offer.
Provost Helen Oswald said: "I am delighted to see the completion of these new build family homes in Wirren Gardens. Sitting in this showhome really allows me to appreciate the quality of these new houses and it's clear that they will make fantastic homes for local people and make a real positive difference to their lives. Montrose has a high demand for council housing and I am delighted we have been able to deliver them on schedule.
"These houses, like all of our housing developments, have been built with energy efficiency to the fore and to a high standard of construction and finish. This makes these much needed new family homes both desirable and affordable properties for families to live in."
Angus Council's Housing Spokesperson, Councillor Donald Morrison said: "The investment we are making in our new-build programme, as well as in our existing council homes, is helping to inject substantial funds into the construction industry and the local economy at a time when it is most needed.
"We are not only delivering more affordable housing, we are also helping to maintain jobs and create training opportunities for young people through our building contracts. We think that these wider social outcomes are a vital aspect of the way we do our business and how we plan for the future."
The development is being built for the council by Bancon Construction at a cost of £6.4m with funding from the Scottish Government of £1.35m.
