£5.7m Maintenance Programme For Glasgow

Scottish Water has said it is continuing with major projects in the Glasgow area.

The project will see almost 20 miles of water pipes upgraded, improving the supply of water for 40,000 people in the area.

The £5.7m scheme of capital maintenance projects involves the replacement or improvement of pipes in Milton, Springburn, Germiston, Ruchazie, Barmulloch, Cranhill, Petershill, Bishopbriggs, Duke Street, Lancefield Quay, Clarkston, Castlemilk, Govanhill, Gorbals, Pollokshields, Langside, Battlefield and Newlands.

The work, which commenced in November 2012, is almost 75% complete and is being carried out on stretches of mains that have been affected by burst pipes in the past. It is hoped the improvements will reduce the risk of bursts in the future, as well as the disruption to supply to customers and road traffic issues that bursts can cause.

It will also help provide clearer, fresher drinking water to properties within the areas mentioned above and reduce leakage of water from the network.

Farrans Construction is due to start some of the upgrade work in the Battlefield area. This will include some open cut work which will involve the excavation of trenches.

In order to carry out this work safely, some road traffic management is required.

From Monday 30 September, for two weeks, Scottish Water will be working in Sinclair Drive from its junction with Dundrennan Road to Overdale Street.

During the same dates, work will also be carried out at Cartvale Road.

From October 16, for two weeks, there will be a road closure in place for south-bound traffic on Battlefield Road. There will also be a road closure on Sinclair Drive from its junction with Overdale Street to its junction with Battlefield Road.

Following some remedial work in Overdale Avenue and Overdale Gardens, Scottish Water will then return to Battlefield Road, while the north-bound carriageway will be closed from November 13 to November 27 between Sinclair Drive and Langside Drive.

Local diversions will be in place once again.

Between 27 November and 4 December, there will be road closures in Overdale Street, Carmichael Place and Braemar Street.

The overall project is expected to be completed early next year.

Jim Hassan, Scottish Water's water operations manager, said: "Scottish Water is well aware of the inconvenience that burst water mains and disruption to the normal water supply can cause and we are delighted to be making steady progress with this important capital maintenance work in these parts of Glasgow.

"The improvements to sections of pipe in these areas will improve the service we provide to our customers there for many years to come."
