Cleland Library in North Lanarkshire is to benefit from a £150,000 refurbishment programme.
It is part of the Council's plans to refurbish the existing library and transform it into a new multi-purpose resource area.
The project is a first for the area, with funds being provided from the change fund programme for older people which supports people for longer in their own homes.
The works will see improved library services for the community and will include an adaptable social space for older people, including those at the nearby Carey Gardens sheltered housing complex. As part of the refurbishment, new windows, doors, ceilings, floors, furniture and fittings, heating systems, disabled toilets and accessibility ramps will be installed.
Elaine McHugh, Head of Housing Services said: "We are delighted to be investing in this vital community facility.
"Improving the facilities on offer will encourage more people to use the library and the addition of social space will be a fantastic resource for our sheltered housing tenants.
"They will be able to hold social activities which will help reduce social isolation amongst older people in the community."
Councillor Sam Love, Convener of Housing and Social Work Services added: "Libraries are such a focal point in any town or village, and we are pleased to be investing and improving the facilities on offer for our sheltered housing residents and the people of Cleland."
Prior to plans being finalised, a community consultation was carried out to seek public opinion on the proposals. The refurbishment is expected to be completed in spring 2014.
