Earlier this week, demolition machinery arrived on site to prepare knocking down the community centre which has been there for more than 80 years.
East Dunbartonshire Council is working with a number of partners to deliver this initiative. They include:
- hub West Scotland: they will manage the construction of the new building. As part of the Scottish Futures Trust, hub West Scotland helps protect jobs in the construction sector in Scotland while also providing the best value for money to the public.
- Fleming Buildings Limited: they have been commissioned, through hubWest Scotland to clear the site and build the new community centre.
- Macmon: they are the architecture firm selected to design the new community centre. They have proven expertise in both creating community buildings and consulting with local people to understand community needs.
Council Leader, Councillor Rhondda Geekie, said: "The Council has worked closely with local people to get to this point and I'm delighted to see progress on the site. I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to this process and helped us design a modern, well-equipped building that will be provide user groups and the wider community with excellent facilities.
"While the building is important, it is not an end in itself. The aim is that it will be a catalyst for change in Hillhead, providing an opportunity for a broad range of community activity and an important social centre."
The new family-centred building is scheduled to open in summer 2014.
