Two Design Awards For Glasgow School

A new school in Glasgow has won two design awards in the 2013 Glasgow Institute of Architects Design Awards.

Notre Dame Primary School and Elie Street Early Years Centre, which are located in the west end of Glasgow, were triumphant in the conversation and education categories.

The school is located on the site of the former Dowanhill Primary School. Elements of the C-listed school building were retained and repaired as part of the design strategy, while other sections were removed and new features created. Other work included barrier free circulation throughout the building, geothermal heating, perimeter railings and gates, the addition of new extensions, new landscaped playgrounds and gardens; and the formation of a new bridge connection to adjacent Dowanhill Park.


The new campus at Notre Dame includes 15 classrooms, 2 GP rooms, games hall, library/ICT suite, combined assembly/dining hall and a multi-use games area, while the nursery playrooms cater for 2-3 & 3-5 year olds. In the school, capacity is for 434 pupils and the nursery has a capacity for 60 children.

Bailie Liz Cameron, Executive Member for Jobs and the Economy at Glasgow City Council, said: "This project is a great example of the fantastic talent we have within our council family. The team involved in the design and construction of this building have created an exceptional and bespoke design.

"But most importantly with all great design, it is already loved by its users and is exactly the type of building the children and staff of both the school and early years service need and deserve. I want to congratulate everyone involved, these two awards are very well deserved."

The school design and build was carried out by Glasgow City Council's officers within the Development & Regeneration Services' Project Management and Design team on behalf of Education Services. The building works were undertaken by City Building.
