Resurfacing Works For Larkhall

A £250,000 project to improve roads in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire are to commence.

The resurfacing works will take place on Machan Road/Strutherhill, between John Street and Middleton Avenue – Stutherhill Industrial Estate.

The local authority has said the scheme will start from today (21 May) and last until 10 June.

The work will be carried out in three phases to help minimise disruption to the local community, but it is thought that the first two phases will involve road closures.

Preparation works will take place on Wednesday 21 May and Thursday 22 using temporary traffic signals, while surfacing works will take place at the John Street junction on 23 May.

The first phase of the works will take place from 27 to 30 May and will see Machan Road close between John Street and Keir Hardie Road. The diversion for this phase is along John Street, Hareleeshill Road and Keir Hardie Road.

Phases two and three will both take place from Monday 2 until Tuesday 10 June. Restrictions will be removed at 6pm on Friday 6 June and reintroduced at 7am on Monday 9 June.

The second phase will take place on Machan Road and Strutherhill, between Keir Hardie Road and Borland Drive, and will require the closure of this section of Machan Road and Strutherhill. The diversion for this phase is along Keir Hardie Road, Burnhead Road, A71 and Carlisle Road.

While the final phase will take place on Strutherhill between Borland Drive and Middleton Avenue, Strutherhill Industrial Estate. The works on this section will be carried out under temporary traffic signals and access will be maintained to the Birkenshaw/Strutherhill area and the Industrial Estate.

Gordon Mackay, South Lanarkshire Council's Head of Roads and Transportation, said: "We appreciate these works will have a significant impact on travelling times and cause disruption to road users.

"I can only apologise for that in advance. However it is important to point out that due to the condition of the road, these works are absolutely necessary.

"Our engineers have investigated the best way to carry out the works. On such a busy route no solution is perfect but we are confident that the scheme selected is the quickest and most efficient, with least disruption to residents and businesses.

"I would ask that people take note of the various phases of the scheme and try to avoid the area if at all possible during the works."
