Council Forms Steering Group With SHEPD

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have formed a steering group.

The group will explore available options around the current network restrictions in the Outer Hebrides and investigating possible solutions which may accommodate additional renewable energy generation.

The group met with SHEPD and the Comhairle on 17 July, setting out its remit and framework.

They were joined by representatives from Community Energy Scotland (CES), Local Energy Scotland (LES) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Calum Iain MacIver said: "There is huge potential for renewable energy in the Outer Hebrides. The richness of the resource has seen many communities and individuals investing in renewable energy generation over the last period.

"That investment has taken the local grid to its absolute physical capacity. Major transmission reinforcement, in due course, will alleviate the situation, but in the meantime it is essential that innovative ways are found to release additional capacity in order to facilitate further community projects."

SHEPD’s Director of Commercial and Connections, Mark Rough added: "The group’s first meeting was very constructive and highlighted the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the renewable sector in the Outer Hebrides.

"Working together with key stakeholders, we will look for opportunities to free up any potential unused capacity in the electricity grid within the islands, as well as technical solutions that could reduce the need for the current network restrictions."
