Scottish National Orchestra Relocates To New Venue

A new music venue has opened in Glasgow, it has been announced.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) has relocated to its new purpose-built facility in the city centre.

Construction of the 600 seat rehearsal and recording facility was completed in October.

The building has been designed by the council's in-house team of architects led by Kerr Robertson.

Features of the new building include fixed sound absorption throughout the hall, adjustable acoustic banners, overheard reflectors and the ability to fold the side balconies against the walls during rehearsal mode.

The project was funded by the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland, along with a mixture of corporate sponsors, trusts and foundations, individual donors and the city council.


In addition, plans to develop a new wing are being discussed, including the instillation of dedicated modern learning and education facilities, with flexible sensory areas, and integrated digital technologies for recording, composing, broadcasting music, and connecting with communities across Scotland and further afield.

The building has also been developed on a brownfield site, while a modern lighting system has been installed which runs off a fraction of the power of current used by concert lighting configurations.

RSNO Chief Executive Dr Krishna Thiagarajan: "For the RSNO the new home serves as a platform for Scotland’s national orchestra to efficiently and effectively build its reputation and increase its capacity to connect with communities across Scotland. The RSNO has met its financial commitment to construct its new home and together with investment from the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council and welcome contribution from Creative Scotland the project team has met the complex challenges of the build to provide a world class music facility."
