West Dunbartonshire Council has secured £630,000 to help create a new community greenspace area in Clydebank.
The £1.5 million scheme will see the former St Eunan's Primary School site redeveloped into a multifunctional space featuring a biodiversity park, an outdoor classroom and natural activity areas for children, an outdoor gym, a sensory garden, raised bed allotments and pathway routes through the site.
The site is currently off-limits to local people after the discovery of asbestos in the soil following the demolition of the old school.
The council has already approved £900,000 for the scheme, with the remaining £630,000 fund provided by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).
Works will see the land safely ‘capped' with a protective barrier to seal in any contaminants indefinitely, with top soil also added.
Project plans will go before a future Planning Committee meeting, with work set to begin in early 2018.
Richard Cairns, the council's Strategic Director for Regeneration, Environment & Growth, said: "This funding will help make it possible for this area to be transformed for the benefit of the people of Clydebank for years to come.
"The Council was keen from the outset to make this an attractive public space and, following extensive consultation with local people, we have now reached a stage where that will become a reality. I'm now really looking forward to seeing progress being made on the site."
