Opening Of New Boroughmuir High School Delayed Until 2018

Work on a new high school in Edinburgh has been hit by fresh delays.

Contractors O'Hare & McGovern, who are building the new Boroughmuir High School, have advised the council that they will be unable to achieve a scheduled handover date of 16 June.

The company is now proposing a new date of 11 August. Following a review of progress on site, along with a new work programme put forward by the contractor, the official opening of the school has been postponed to January 2018.

The council said postponing the opening until after the Christmas holidays will ensure the new school is ready, with a smooth transition from the old to new building.

However, Cllr Cammy Day said he is "extremely frustrated" that the council have been let down by their contractors.

"This new delay will be deeply disappointing for staff, pupils and parents alike," he said.

"While this is not a situation any of us would choose to be in we must ensure we put the children's interests first and foremost."

Cllr Cathy Fullerton added: "The Council undertook an independent review of the contractors' programme prior to the announcement of this most recent delay. In the circumstances I believe postponing the opening until January is the right thing to do. We will continue to monitor the works on site rigorously and ensure everyone with an interest in the school is kept up to date."
