BAM has completed a new primary school in the playground of the existing school on Liberton Street, designed to accommodate up to 231 pupils and featuring an inspiring learning environment, a multi-use games hall and administration offices.
During construction the existing school remained operational which required careful consideration and planning.
The school forms part of a combined £18m contract awarded to BAM which includes a second primary school, Blairdardie and is scheduled for completion in Spring 2019. Funding was made available through Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) which delivers public infrastructure investment on behalf of the Scottish Government through the hub network and Glasgow City Council.
Bruce Dickson, BAM Regional Director – Scotland, said: "Working on a site where the existing school remains operational and in the middle of a residential area always requires careful consideration and planning however, our project team developed exceptionally strong links to both the school and the local community which have paid dividends.
"The team was very involved with the school and the pupils over the course of construction working on a number of initiatives which was very rewarding.
"The project also featured a new apprenticeship initiative, delivered through First Steps Future Training, designed to support Syrian Refugees. Seventeen year old Omran Isbaa began a four year painting apprenticeship working on site at Carntyne and is now working on placement at Blairdardie Primary School.
"It's been a very positive collaboration and I'm sure the pupils and teaching staff will enjoy their new surroundings."
Iain Marley, Chief Executive, hub West Scotland said: "Carntyne Primary School is an inspiring and high quality learning environment with a fresh contemporary look and feel and high quality finishes throughout the school. We are thrilled to have delivered this project for Glasgow City Council on time and within budget and to have established such a positive relationship with the local community.
"These outcomes could not have been achieved without talent, hard work and a commitment to collaborate so my thanks go to the combined client, contractor, design team and other consultant partners for their endeavours which have resulted in this excellent illustration of the benefits of our partnership approach."
BAM Construction has a track record of the education sector having delivered a number of primary and secondary schools in both East and West Scotland.
